A positioner is a device that ensures the valves physical position (opening / closing) matches the control signal from the controller.
It compares the input control signal (pneumatic or electrical) to the actual valve position (feedback) and adjusts the valve actuators pressure to correct any error.
In many cases, the positioner also acts as a servo booster, converting a low-energy input signal into a higher pressure output (e.g. up to the supply pressure, e.g. 6 bar / 90 psi) to drive the actuator.
